Research interests
Dr. Tai Mendenhall is a Medical Family Therapist and Associate Professor in the Couple and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota (UMN) in the Department of Family Social Science. He is also the Associate Director of the UMN’s Citizen Professional Center and Director of the UMN’s Medical Reserve Corps’ Mental Health Disaster-Response Teams. He works actively in the conduct of collaborative family healthcare and community-based participatory research (CBPR) focused on a variety of public health issues.
To-date, Tai has lead or contributed to over 130 publications, including 89 articles (45 peer-reviewed/ refereed) and 40 book chapters related to MFT, MedFT, and behavioral health in journals such as Family Relations, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, Families, Systems, & Health, Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, Action Research, Nursing Inquiry, Traumatology, Annals of Family Medicine, and the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine. He has published five edited books (four as first-editor), including three texts regarding contemporary understandings of Intimate Relationships and two texts regarding cutting-edge applications of MedFT. Tai served as member of an AAMFT-appointed task-force from 2015-2018 to articulate formal MedFT competencies – and the respective knowledge/abilities/personal characteristics and target indicators that they encompass – across six domains (systems, biopsychosocial/spiritual foci, collaboration, leadership, ethics, and diversity). He has presented over 300 professional workshops/trainings across state-, national-, and international- arenas.
