Abstract

Full two-dimensional velocity fields were measured in forced jets of glycerin/water solution flowing into and pinching off in an ambient of Dow Corning 200 Series silicone fluid. The Reynolds, Froude, and Weber numbers computed at the nozzle exit were 34, 0.20, and 0.25 respectively. The experimental results are compared with the results of a three-dimensional direct numerical simulation of a time-developing periodic round jet. The simulation utilizes the full Navier-Stokes equations and the 'partial miscibility regularization' of Lowengrub and Truskinovsky. Both experiments and simulations reveal areas of strong supplemental vorticity prior to pinch-off, and inverted vorticity associated with rebound after pinch-off. As the flow approaches pinch-off, the experimental interface is conical upstream and rounded downstream. The simulations exhibit this trend although the interface angles do not match exactly.
