Abstract

A possible method of whey treatment is incorporating an anaerobic digester to pretreat the wastewater before it is discharged into an advanced wastewater treatment system. The digester would reduce the pollution strength of the waste and provide an energy source for the creamery. The objectives of the study reported in this paper were to study the anaerobic digestion process of sweet cheese whey to 1) characterize the effluent from the digesters for wastewater treatment efficiencies and 2) characterize the quantity and quality of biogas for energy production. Study materials, methods and results are discussed.
