Abstract

The domestication of animals began more than 15,000 years ago and continues today because animals play a significant role in human life. Research examining the use of animals as a complementary or alternative therapy is based on studies about pet ownership. The International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO) is the leading global association of 90 multidisciplinary organizations that engage in practice, research, and/or education in animal-assisted therapy (AAT), animal-assisted activity, and service animal training. Many studies indicate that there are physical and/or psychological benefits derived from human-animal bonds. Pets can provide companionship, promote dialogue and social interaction, facilitate exercise, increase feelings of security, mitigate the effects of stress, be a source of consistency, and be a comfort to touch. Although research supports the positive benefits and the safety of AAT for patients with various health conditions, the potential risks, such as disease transmission, allergies, and bites, must be carefully taken into consideration.
