Antipsychotics and antidepressants

Abstract

Antidepressants and antipsychotics are neuropsychiatric medications used to treat depressive disorders and psychosis, respectively. This chapter covers the toxicological aspects of several typical and atypical antipsychotics and antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, selective norepinephrine-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Prevalence and epidemiology of toxic exposures of these drug classes are also presented. Compounds in these classes that are most commonly associated with overdose or toxicity are discussed in detail. A guide for the management of patients presenting with antidepressant or antipsychotic overdose is provided. Finally, analytical methods for clinical laboratory assessment are discussed.
