Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between appearance and factors of the ideal body within a historical context. We examine how the body provides the foundation of appearance as well as how it grounds the experience of viewing the visual form of dress. The central question of this research is: What are the meanings that are reflected by the visual form of dress within a specific social context? A four-step methodology slows down the process of viewing and response to analyze the relationships.
