Abstract

In the last few decades the field of stability analysis of fluid flows has seen many advances due to the development of new ideas and methods such as transient growth analysis, global stability analysis, resolvent analysis and input-output analysis. While these techniques have been mainly used to study the stability of flows about a stable base state, in recent years the use of these techniques and ideas have been extended to analyze turbulent mean states with promising success. The goal has been to extract coherent structures and statistics from mean profiles of turbulent flows. While most of these studies have involved the analysis of incompressible flows, in the present work we aim to examine compressible flows in this context. With this in view, we present some results for a compressible channel flow to draw preliminary conclusions regarding the effects of compressibility.
