Abstract

Agency in makerspaces is frequently in flux, amplified or attenuated through interactions between the maker and individuals around them. Looking at goal announcements in a makerspace designed to provide no predetermined goals, we see that these moments tend to follow triadic dialog patterns and that makers orient to the potential evaluation through hedging and multimodal demonstration. We argue that maker educators need to carefully attend to how interaction shapes maker agency without assuming that open-endedness alone will suffice.
