Abstract

Care of critically ill children is more easily provided in areas dedicated to acute care. The development of neonatal intensive care units, pediatric intensive care units, and pediatric emergency medicine departments can have an impact on morbidity and mortality if designed and supported appropriately. This chapter provides a basic outline for the development and sustainability of these high acuity areas in limited resource settings, with an overview of recommended supplies, equipment, medications, and personnel. These guidelines will need to be adapted based on local, regional, and countrywide circumstances.
