Abstract
This article analyzes the amparo colectivo, a law enacted in Argentina in the early 1990s which permits groups of citizens to sue the State or a private corporation collectively. It describes the history, structure, and limitations of the amparo colectivo, using as illustrations some of the cases in which it has been employed. From a larger perspective, this paper argues that the important role of Argentine cause lawyers in creating, using, and interpreting the amparo colectivo gives them a direct stake in the evolution and preservation of the State and the rule of law in a post-authoritarian society.
