Abstract

The historical circumstances in which we live greatly affect how we understand the past. Over the half millennium of scholarly investigation on the limes and the Danube frontier, research goals, methods, and interpretations have changed profoundly. Since the political transformations that have taken place in Europe in the past three decades, new research interests and questions pertaining to the Roman frontier are receiving ever greater attention, and they can be understood in the context of new concerns directly related to the expansion of the European Union and the broader processes of globalization. Along with these changes is new emphasis on engaging a wider public in both the appreciation and the practice of archaeological study of the limes and of sites along the Danube frontier.
