Abstract
This paper examines cleft sentences in an English novel and its Norwegian translation. Results support earlier findings that clefts are much more frequently used in Norwegian than in English and that the frequency difference cannot be attributed to grammatical properties alone. It is proposed that the difference reflects a strong tendency in Norwegian to map information structure directly onto syntactic structure.
