Abstract

The complementary integrative approaches are of particular interest for the relief of symptoms from chronic conditions, which are notoriously difficult to treat with conventional methods. Individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) seek out complementary integrative medicine (CIM) after conventional health care, used directly after their accident, fails to support their full recovery. This chapter presents CIM techniques that have been used with individuals with ABI, with a focus on available evidence to support the practice of CIM approaches in ABI rehabilitation. Herbal medicine and supplements are a popular form of complementary medicine for ABI. Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that the body can cure itself. Aromatherapy is defined as the use of aromatic essential oils for therapeutic purposes in the form of inhalation or massage. Traditional Chinese medicine is composed of several treatment modalities, such as moxibustion, acupuncture, and herbs for healing.
