Abstract

Spartina leaves from industrially polluted and undeveloped marsh sites were analysed for content of mercury and eight other elements (B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn). The industrially polluted site had been identified six years earlier as a heavily mercury-impacted area. Although other metals now do not show elevated levels in leaves of Spartina, high leaf-mercury contents have persisted, despite cessation of discharge of mercury in 1972.
