Abstract

The study of alternative secondary treatment systems for use in conjunction with septic tanks to solve the problem of contamination of raw water sources is discussed. The work was carried out in northern Minnesota with over 500,000 individual on-site treatment systems. This study centered on the potential of a sand filter, a peat filter, and a subsurface-flow constructed wetland to remove viruses from septic tanks effluent. It was found that the tested systems gave 95% removal of seeded or indigenous viruses in summer and 90% in winter.
