Abstract

The guidelines for the design of both centrosymmetric and bipolar chromophores with large two-photon absorptivities are developed, based upon theoretical, synthetic, and nonlinear spectroscopic studies. Theoretical studies were performed on a donor-acceptor stilbene in which the ground-state polarization is varied by application of an electric field. An optimal value of ground-state polarization is present at which δ for the lowest lying strong two-photon transition was optimized. This condition was met when the molecule had roughly the correct degree of ground-state polarization required to maximize the first hyperpolarizability.
