Abstract

In a laboratory study, a sawdust mixed liquor was used to determine the effect of geometric screen opening on flow capacity and solids removal capacity. Results indicated that slots up to 180 mm long were superior to 6 mm round holes for maintaining flow capacity, but quality of screen effluent was not significantly affected. A follow-up field study showed that polyethylene slotted screens removed 74% more swine manure solids, were more resilient, were more corrosion resistant and were easier to maintain than metal slotted screens with zinc, polyurethane, epoxy, or conventional rust resistant paint coatings.
