Abstract
A driver assist system has been developed by the Intelligent Vehicles Lab at the University of Minnesota to assist drivers of specialty vehicles under difficult conditions. The system uses carrier phase, dual frequency differential GPS, a lane-level, high density, high accuracy geospatial database, and a lateral control algorithm for lateral assistance, radar and/or lidar for obstacle detection (critical in low visibility), and graphical, haptic, and tactile driver interfaces to provide guidance information to a driver. This system is deployed and operational in snowplows (both in Minnesota and Alaska), and in a Minnesota State Patrol squad car. The system is installed in a Metro Transit bus used for driver interface research. Provided herein is an overview of the driver assist system, and a description of the Head Up Display and the support subsystems used for lateral and longitudinal guidance and forward collision avoidance in low visibility conditions.
