Abstract

Investigations of ecosystem function in fresh and saltwater have been dominated by two major themes. The themes originate in two different ways of thinking about biological production. Biological processes can be regarded either as conduits for the flow of mass and energy across trophic levels or as the mechanisms by which individuals and populations maintain their existence. These processes include photosynthesis, mineral nutrient uptake, gathering of food and extracting nutrition and energy from it, as well as life history patterns, behavior, and survival strategies.
