Effect of fusion and fusion configuration on the biomechanics of the adjacent segment in the canine lumbar spine

Abstract

The purpose of this study was toinvestigate the change in motion of the adjacentintervertebral space and the change in load on the facet joint after lumbosacral fusions with the fused bones in different configurations. An instrumented spatial linkage (ISL) was used to measure the changes in three-dimensional motion for the canine intervertebral joint (L6-L7) before and after a fusion at L7-S1 without interfering with the natural kinematics and mechanics of the joint. A strain gage technique was used to measure facet force changes on the L6-L7 joint before and after a fusion. This study shows that the facet joint load and vertebral body motion of a lumbar spine segment adjacent to a fusion will be altered by the presence of the fusion.
