Abstract

Improperly tuned exciter control of synchronous machines will threaten the security and reliability of power systems by introducing lightly or even negatively damped electromechanical oscillations. In this paper, we propose a damping evaluation method for exciter control of synchronous machines based on energy dissipation analysis. The proposed method facilitates the location of improperly tuned exciter controls in power systems and is verified by time-domain dynamic simulations on a four-machine-two-area system.
