Abstract

Conjugated thiophenes have shown significant promise as light absorbers and hole conductors in next generation organic photovoltaics. Investigations of the complex intramolecular excited state dynamics in these molecules are presented using a host of electronic spectroscopies, including ultrafast fluorescence, pump-probe, and 2-color photon echo peak shift. Relaxation and the competition between intersystem crossing and internal conversion are considered in a series of substituted oligomers. Exciton localization and migration are investigated in a set of dendrimers and size selected polymers.
