Abstract

We present results from two laboratory experiments at UCLA motivated by recent proposals to place compact high-energy electron beam sources and loop antenna on future spacecraft. The spacecraft-borne beams. if stable to wave generation. may be used to map magnetic field lines in the Earth's magnetosphere. Both the beam and the loop may be used to generate waves for radiation belt remediation. Here. we investigate Z-mode and whistler emission produced by an electron beam and the efficiency of producing whistlers using an antenna.
