Abstract

Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. has been contracted by the U.S. Navy to install a demonstration version of their modular PowerBuoy wave energy conversion system off of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The primary goal of this five-year test is to obtain operational data to validate the long-term performance of a multi-unit wave energy conversion system. This scaleable system holds the promise of providing non-polluting, reliable, and inexpensive power to civilian and military coastal sites around the world. This paper will discuss aspects of the design and phased installation process of the array of PowerBuoy units.
