Abstract

The editors are thrilled to present this special issue of Symposium in honor of celebrated poet and long-time Syracuse University professor, Jaime Ferrán. This year we celebrate the 75^th anniversary of the journal and the 76th anniversary of the Centro de Estudios Hispánicos, vibrant legacies still thriving to this day in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Syracuse University. The articles and testimonies that comprise this special issue point to the major influence of Ferrán’s poetry on mid-century Spanish letters as well as his spirit of generosity that lives in his body of work and life experience.

Funding Information:
Ferrán was committed to making literature, especially poetry, accessible to younger audiences. To this end, he published 9 children’s books, including five of poetry and a prose series of 4 books about a young angel who comes down to Earth to help others in all the different places where Ferrán himself had traveled and/or lived: Spain, Colombia, North and South America. His book Ángel en Colombia won the prestigious Premio Lazarillo for children’s literature in 1968 and his book of poetry La playa larga was awarded the distinction of “Libro de interés” by the Spanish Ministry of Education in 1982 in part for its presentation of ecological themes. One of his books of children’s poetry, Cuaderno de música, originally published in Spanish in 1983, was adapted in 2020 as a cantata, in Catalan, entitled L’espill encantat, which won the Josep Anselm Clavé Prize for Best Live Coral Performance in Catalonia that year.
