Abstract

A novel method is proposed for spacecraft deorbit trajectory tracking in low-Earth orbit using model predictive control to command changes in aerodynamic drag. Compared to previous approaches in the literature, the proposed method offers more direct control over actuator usage and is easier to tune. Most importantly, the proposed method is able to leverage the most recent and accurate knowledge of atmospheric density to improve tracking performance in a simple and computationally efficient way. Proof-of-concept simulations of the control strategy applied to targeted reentry demonstrate these advantages.
