Abstract

Localized corrosion continues to be the subject of research because the intense attack of vulnerable metals may cause the loss of properties in engineering structures. It has a heterogeneous character that makes it unpredictable and difficult to characterize in the initial stages of attack. Previous work on galvanic corrosion on heterogeneous surfaces under thin electrolyte films provides a convenient basis on which to continue studies of the phenomena. Models of crevice corrosion have some similarities to atmospheric corrosion with galvanic coupling, and the analogies will be discussed in this paper.
