Abstract

The introduction of a theme-based spiral curriculum into the bioprocess engineering option in the undergraduate curriculum in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) is discussed. The curriculum will be problem based and ensure opportunities or reflection and cognitive restructuring by returning, at appropriate intervals, to the basic organizing principles within the theme. The Bioprocess Engineering option within BSE encompasses a wide spectrum of engineering practices involving the utilization of a wide range of biological feed-stock of the production of food, fiber, and value added products. The project also introduces the object-oriented approach in engineering design.
