Abstract
Results of metallographic examination of strain-induced martensite at crack tip in 0. 5-in. thick samples of 9Cr- 8Ni- 4Mo- Mn- Si steel, at room temperature and -196 C, are described; data obtained were compared with theoretical estimate, which is explained; reference is made to fact that strain-induced martensitic transformation may be used to attain desirable combinations of strength, ductility, and fracture toughness.
