Abstract

A procedure for estimating biomass during batch fermentation from on-line gas analysis is presented. First, the respiratory quotient was used to determine the fraction of the total oxygen utilization rate required for cell maintenance and growth versus product synthesis. The modified oxygen utilization rate was then used to estimate biomass on-line by integrating the oxygen balance for cell synthesis-maintenance. The method is illustrated for the case of L-lysine synthesis by Corynebacterium glutamicum.
