Abstract

This chapter is a review of the ingredients of oral rehydration salt (ORS) solution and the use of ORS as first-line prevention and treatment of dehydration due to gastrointestinal fluid loss in children. It includes the physical assessment for degree of dehydration, the World Health Organization’s oral rehydration therapy (ORT) plan, and instructions for homemade ORS. Additionally, we review unique considerations when rehydrating a child with malnutrition and potential barriers to success in the treatment of dehydration with ORS.
