Platelet adhesion on adsorbed sulfonated block copolymers

Abstract

The adsorption of a sulfonated polyelectrolyte polymer to a polypropylene substrate and this polymer's interaction with blood were studied. Ellipsometry, showed that polymer adsorption from aqueous solution was dominated by the ionic strength of the system. The platelet adhesion seen on the sulfonated surfaces differs from the platelet adhesion observed on uncoated polypropylene materials. Platelets aggregated, but did not spread on the sulfonated material, in contrast to fairly uniform platelet coverage and spreading on untreated polypropylene.
