Abstract

Thin platelets of hemlock wood (Tsuga heterophylla) have been delignified at several temperatures with a 1. 0 N NaOH aqueous solution in a 'flow-through' reactor whereby condensation reactions are avoided or minimized. The amounts of lignin remaining in the tissue after several periods of time have been determined. From these experiments, the rates of delignification reactions have been estimated.
