Abstract

Investigated the impact of mathematics instruction on the measured numerical competence of 80 black and 83 white trainees in a successful manpower development project. The California Achievement Test-junior high school level-was administered at successive 6-wk intervals over a 6-mo period. Results reveal a significant Race * Training interaction which indicated that the whites profited more from the instruction than did the blacks. Findings imply that racial differences in measured mathematical competence are not reduced by training but may in fact be increased. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).
