Abstract

Schemes for random-double-track-error correction (RDTEC) in magnetic tapes are presented. Assuming (z minus 1)-bit data bytes, a w-track tape with w equals z plus i, i greater than equivalent to 0, will have (i plus 1) tracks provided for redundancy. Two such cases, z and z plus 1, are considered with details for 9-track and 10-track formats. RDTEC is obtained by judiciously interleaving multiple copies of a code defined over a nonbinary field.
