Retrovirus restriction factors

Abstract

One of the major advances in the last decade of retrovirus research has been the discovery of cellular proteins that function to block viral replication. Retrovirus restriction factors such as APOBEC3G, TRIM5α and BST2 are dominant, variable, and interferon-inducible, and they have forced susceptible viruses to evolve intricate escape measures. This chapter will focus on these prototypical restriction factors and highlight several common themes.
