Abstract

Sleep related eating disorder (SRED) is a parasomnia caused by dysfunction of the mechanisms that normally maintain an overnight fast. The most common consequence of SRED is weight gain but patients also struggle with anxiety, the consumption of inedible substances, sleep related injury, difficulty controlling blood glucose in the setting of diabetes, and poor dentition. As with sleepwalking, the most important strategy for managing amnestic SRED is to identify and treat any underlying sleep disorder, minimize sedating medications as well as optimize the duration and circadian timing of sleep. Pharmacological options for SRED include bedtime pramipexole and topiramate.
