Funding Information:My own research and outreach activity encompasses the ecology of children’s school success in the context of their family, community, and the school system. It is a welcome challenge to study the social capital literature and to evaluate measures of social capital that can enhance my research model. My outreach commitments include working with two elementary schools located in low-income neighborhoods. Over 60% of the kindergarten children in one school come from Indochinese refugee families where English is a second language. Relationships between the elementary school system staff, the parents, and members of the community, including the University of Minnesota’s students and faculty, are being developed, i.e., social capital development, to help the children’s achievement in school. This outreach project is funded by Danforth Foundation.
