The Education Status and Sociocultural Perspectives of Latinos

Abstract

Home language and literacy environments provide a critical context for the development of key foundational skills that support reading outcomes. Latino families in the United States represent an important and growing population and the home language and literacy environments of families who identify as Latino has been understudied. This chapter will present data from a survey completed by over 500 Latino families across 5 states documenting the language and literacy activities they engage in with their preschool-aged children. Results indicate frequent reading with children and a broad range of activities that support their children’s language and literacy development.
