Abstract

The impact of the Internet on earlier and potential developments in the field of communications technologies is discussed. Advances in mobile technologies are providing higher transmission capacities and are leading to a convergence of wireless with the Internet Protocol (IP). It is expected that many of the incentives that have prevailed in the wireline Internet will continue to apply in mobile data and lead to more advancements in communications technologies. It is also expected that the convergence of IP with wireless technology can have various unanticipated outcomes for the wireline Internet and its impact on the growth and development of communications technologies.
