Abstract
Alkali metal reduction of M2(CO)10 or M(CO) 5- (M = Mn and Re) in hexamethylphosphoramide provides the first non-cluster binary metal carbonyl trianions, M(CO)4 3-, which are characterized by their spectral and chemical properties.

Funding Information:A possible alternative formulation of (I) involv-ing HM(C0),2-, which should have reactivity patterns similar to those of M(CO),3-, is considered less likely inthat the lH n.m.r. spectrum of (I)in [2H18]-HMPA was shown to have no signal due to a metal hydride. The extreme air sensitivity of (I) has prevented attempts to obtain con-ductivity data on these species.
