N2 - The existing literature on environmental economics provides few insights into the environmental degradation that occurs as aboriginals come into contact with the outside world. In this article, a model explaining why this interaction results in the demise of indigenous peoples' tenure regimes is presented. Anthropological studies conducted in the Amazon Basin indicate that environmental degradation is a consequence of this demise.
