Abstract

The article explores how unfinished music recordings like demos can serve as critical sites of queerness in African American popular music. It describes the deviation of popular musician Prince's album "Dirty Mind" from a standard studio album sound quality that reflects the musician's deviant sexualities. It also traces the album's Black queer imaginings through a brief reading of two recordings, including Lil' Kim's "Queen Bitch."
