Viscosity modeling in novolac-cured epoxies

Abstract

The viscosity in an epoxy-novolac system was studied as a function of conversion and temperature. The viscosity of the thermosetting system showed to be proportional to a power of the calculated weight-average molecular weight; however, the exponent of the molecular weight varies with temperature. A better correlation is found if the viscosity is expressed as a product of molecular weight and a friction factor which depends on both temperature and Tg. Data of viscosity versus conversion at different temperatures can be described by one single straight line of slope 1 if this approach is employed.
