Abstract
There are many nurses who had a significant impact on the development and growth of gerontological nursing. There are those that provided the foundation and were the building blocks of gerontological nursing. Those following served as the cornerstones to fortify the foundation of gerontological nursing. Today there are rising scholars serving as the stepping-stones for the future of gerontological nursing. This article highlights the exemplary gerontological nurses that contributed and are contributing to the research, practice, and education of the mature specialization of gerontological nursing.

Eleanor McConnell PhD, RN, GCNS-BC associate professor at Duke University School of Nursing is the director of the Center of Excellence in Geriatric Education and holds a joint appointment at the Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center where she serves as clinical nurse specialist and nurse scientist. For over two decades Dr. McConnell's research has centered on the frail older adults, their physical environment and promoting functional capacity. She is noted as a pioneer in gerontechnology for her creative research on the Dress Project, funded by the Alzheimer's Association and NIH, which created assistive technology interventions to help functionally and memory impaired older adults, and developed a conceptual prototype for an automated dressing coach. 56

Mary Stark Harper PhD, RN, FAAN (1919–2006) was a pioneer whose initial research on the geriatric psychiatric and minority health, particularly veterans, led the path for others to imitate. She served on four White House panels on mental health and health care reform. In 1972, she joined the National institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and organized the NIH Minority Fellowship Program. In 1995 she was a consultant to the White House Conference on Aging. She was inducted as a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing in 2001. 10
