Wearability and Comfort Improvements to Active Compression Stockings for Lower Leg Compressive Therapy

Abstract

This paper presents the iterative design and development of an actuator-powered, lower leg compressive therapy stocking to provide dynamic compression in a low-profile, textile-based form factor. The active component of the garment uses knitted Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators which contract upon heating to provide the compressive forces on the body. These active materials are designed to enable at-home dynamic compression and can be actuated using a commercial heating pad. The design of a second-generation device - described herein - is intended to improve upon the first-generation garment (previously presented in the literature) by improving wearability/comfort, minimizing pressure points caused during compression, improving the user experience of the device, and expanding the active component to include both the calf and foot.
